Did seven protesters die in Delhi on 20 July? No, the claim is false

An Instagram video claimed 7 dead, 391 injured and 250 arrested by the Army and police. No death was reported by police, the CJP or hospitals, and the Army says it was not deployed.

Posts on Instagram, Facebook and X claimed that seven protesters were killed when police and the Army cracked down on the Cockroach Janta Party's march in Delhi on 20 July 2026. That is false: no protest-related death was recorded, and the Army says it did not deploy for the protest.

False

Claim: "7 protesters were killed, 391 injured (32 in critical condition)" and more than 250 arrested by the Indian Army and Delhi Police on 20 July.

Said by: The Instagram account @zarb_e.zulfiqar, followed by at least 28 other posts.

What the record shows: No deaths were reported by police, the CJP or hospitals. Injury and arrest figures do not match, and the Army denied any deployment.

Where the claim came from

The claim began with a video posted on 20 July 2026 by the Instagram account Zarb E Zulfiqar (@zarb_e.zulfiqar). Its caption, attributed to unnamed "reports", said seven protesters had been killed and 391 injured, 32 of them critically. Soch Fact Check

Soch Fact Check found the same claim in at least 19 Facebook posts, two Instagram posts, one Threads post and six X posts, in English and Urdu. One Facebook video had 620 likes when reviewed. Several of the accounts regularly shared Pakistan-related content, though Soch could not confirm every account's location. Soch Fact Check

What the evidence shows

Deaths. Delhi Police said no protest-related death had occurred. Newschecker found that neither the CJP nor police reported any death. Soch Fact Check The CJP, which had every reason to publicise deaths, reported none.

Injuries. Police counted 118 security personnel and about 60 protesters injured. AP/PBS RML Hospital recorded 65 medico-legal cases by 7 pm, and the CJP said about 150 people were hospitalised. Wikipedia NDTV reported that a 21-year-old woman on ventilator support was the only protest patient still admitted at RML on 22 July, and she was recovering. Arrests. Around 70 people were detained on 20 July and later released. A separate operation on 24 July put 215 people in preventive custody and formally arrested three. Soch Fact Check

The Army. The Indian Army denied deploying personnel in New Delhi for the protest. The forces on the ground were Delhi Police, the Rapid Action Force and the CRPF. Soch Fact Check

Context

The march did involve serious force. Police fired pellet rounds, and a 19-year-old student lost sight in one eye. Al Jazeera Exaggerations like the death claim make real injuries easier to dismiss.
