Is Helle Lyng linked to the Cockroach Janta Party? Only by a timeline coincidence

The claim rests on dates, not documents. The CJP began online in India on 16 May 2026; Lyng called out her question to Modi in Oslo on 18 May.

In October 2026 analyst PN Rai, amplified by the RSS-linked weekly Organiser, presented Norwegian journalist Helle Lyng as part of a foreign network behind the Cockroach Janta Party. There is no evidence of any link: the only connection offered is that the CJP was founded two days before her question to Narendra Modi.

No evidence

Claim: Helle Lyng is connected to the CJP as part of an Oslo-based effort to script the movement.

Said by: PN Rai, in a video posted on 4 October 2026, and Organiser, 5 October 2026.

What the record shows: No document, message, payment or meeting links her to the CJP or its leaders. The CJP was founded on 16 May 2026, two days before her question on 18 May.

Where the claim came from

Claim · PN Rai Rai said the CJP "was never formed in Abhijeet Dipke's bedroom", that its strategy was crafted at the Human Rights Foundation's Oslo Freedom Forum, and that the "script" was "prepared well in advance". He named Lyng as a featured forum speaker who had "heckled" Modi in Oslo. Organiser

Organiser set out a timeline: Lyng's question on 18 May, the forum on 1 to 3 June, Dipke's return from the US on 6 June, and the CJP's protests intensifying in June. It said "reports and records indicate" links among CJP spokesperson Saurav Das, Scroll's Supriya Sharma and forum networks, but named no record. Organiser

What the evidence shows

No evidence Organiser cites no documents for the funding, training or coordination claims, and the article carries no response from the CJP, HRF or Lyng. Organiser

Documented The CJP began with Dipke's X post on 16 May 2026, a day after the Chief Justice's "cockroaches" remark. A Google form drew 50,000 sign-ups by the next morning. The Wire That was two days before Lyng's question and about two weeks before the forum.

Documented Lyng's question was about press freedom. She called out to Modi as he left a joint appearance with Norway's Prime Minister, and posted that Norway ranks first and India 157th on the World Press Freedom Index. Nothing in it mentions the CJP or Indian students. Nieman Reports

She is not on the Oslo Freedom Forum's speaker lists, as shown in our fact check on the speaker claim. Oslo Freedom Forum

The one concrete funding detail in the Organiser piece, a grant to Saurav Das, comes from the Thakur Family Foundation, a different body from HRF, and has nothing to do with Lyng. Organiser

Context

The claim is part of a wider set of "foreign hand" allegations against the CJP. Petitions seeking CBI, NIA or ED probes into the party were dismissed by the Supreme Court and the Allahabad High Court. Asked about foreign funding, the MEA spokesperson said he had no information to share. Hindustan Times Wikipedia More is on our page on the foreign reaction to India's protests.
