After the 10 October 2026 crackdown in Delhi, CJP leader Ajinkya Shinde said "tens of thousands" were detained across Delhi and India, and AAP's Sanjay Singh said "more than 6,000" were arrested in Delhi. Neither gave a source. Reported counts for Delhi ranged from about 1,500 to more than 3,000, and police have published no official total.
Claim: "Tens of thousands" were detained on 10 October (Shinde), or "more than 6,000" were arrested in Delhi (Singh).
Said by: CJP's Ajinkya Shinde on X, and AAP MP Sanjay Singh in a PTI video, both on 11 October 2026.
What the record shows: Reported Delhi figures: about 1,500 (Hindustan Times, citing Delhi Police), more than 2,000 (Reuters) and more than 3,000 (Tribune, ETV Bharat, TOI). No published count supports either higher figure.
Where the claim came from
Claim · Ajinkya Shinde, CJP At 8:49 am on 11 October Shinde wrote on X: "The manner in which tens of thousands of people were detained yesterday across Delhi and India will not go unchallenged." Ajinkya Shinde
Claim · Sanjay Singh, AAP In a video posted by PTI that afternoon, Singh said: "More than 6,000 people were arrested in Delhi yesterday." Singh was himself among the AAP leaders detained on 10 October. PTI Tribune
What the evidence shows
Documented Mass detentions did happen. Police used stadiums as detention centres and pressed prisoner buses into service. ThePrint Counts rose through the day: about 500 in the morning, about 1,000 by the afternoon, and more than 3,000 across New Delhi district by evening, ETV Bharat reported. ETV Bharat
A round-up that night set out the spread: about 1,500 in Delhi (Hindustan Times, citing Delhi Police), more than 2,000 (Reuters) and more than 3,000 (Tribune, ETV Bharat, TOI). Mumbai Police said more than 400 were detained in Mumbai. TBS
One higher figure did appear. The Tribune's live page headline at 7:29 pm said "7,000 protesters detained by Delhi Police", but the page did not say who gave that number, and 7,000 was the turnout police had said that morning they expected. Tribune It is not a sourced count.
No evidence Singh's 6,000 is about double the highest sourced Delhi figure. Shinde's "tens of thousands" covers the whole country, where no national count exists; detentions were reported in Mumbai, Gujarat and elsewhere, but no outlet has added them up, and the known numbers fall far short. Activists made a similar "thousands" claim before the protest, also without police confirmation. ThePrint
Wording matters too. Many of those held, including Arvind Kejriwal, Mamata Banerjee and AISA's Neha Bora, were released the same evening. TBS Delhi Police described only three people, CJP leaders Dipke, Ranka and Das, as held under "preventive arrest". Delhi Police
Context
Delhi Police have not released an official total, which leaves room for every side to pick a number. The BJP's Delhi unit said turnout was weak. BJP Delhi The full record is on our Jantar Mantar 10 October page.
