Did the government block the Cockroach Janta Party's X account? Yes, until a court reversed it

The account was withheld in India in May 2026 on a MeitY order citing national security. The Centre later told the Delhi High Court it had no objection to unblocking.

The Cockroach Janta Party said in May 2026 that the government had blocked its X account. That is confirmed: the Ministry of Electronics and IT had the account withheld in India under Section 69A of the IT Act, and the Delhi High Court revoked the block on 7 July 2026.

Confirmed

Claim: The Union government blocked the CJP's account on X.

Said by: The CJP and its founder Abhijeet Dipke.

What the record shows: A MeitY order under Section 69A, citing "national security", had the account withheld in India around 21 May. The Delhi High Court revoked it on 7 July after the Centre said it had no objection.

Where the claim came from

The CJP was launched on 16 May 2026 and grew to millions of followers within days. Around 21 May its X account stopped being visible in India. Indian Express

On 23 May Dipke said the party's website had also been taken down and his Instagram accounts hacked, and accused the government. Al Jazeera The website and Instagram claims are separate from the X block, which is the only one documented in court.

What the evidence shows

Documented The Indian Express reported that the government saw a "national security" threat in the handle and asked X to block it, using Section 69A of the Information Technology Act. Indian Express

Dipke challenged the order in the Delhi High Court in Abhijit Dipke v. Union of India. He was represented by senior advocate Akhil Sibal with Vrinda Grover and others. The court first directed MeitY's Review Committee to examine his case and allowed him to appear virtually. LiveLaw

Government's position Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court the Centre's main concern was that the party's posts could cause "chaos among students and parents" during the NEET exam. He said the Centre had no objection to unblocking the account. LiveLaw

Documented On 7 July 2026 Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma allowed the plea and revoked the blocking order, noting that the NEET exam had concluded, so the Centre's stated concern no longer applied. LiveLaw

So the claim is accurate on both points: the block came from a government order, and it was lifted by a court rather than voluntarily.

Context

The X block was not the only restriction. After the 20 July march, the CJP's 26.5-million-follower Instagram page was briefly unavailable in India on 22 July, and posts by its spokespersons were restricted. Meta's notices cited a legal request or an automated system under Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act. Alt News The NEET-UG exam of 3 May had been cancelled over a paper leak, and a re-exam was held on 21 June. Moneylife The full timeline is on the Cockroach Janta Party protests page.
